Anton J. Hopen, Patents, Trademarks & Copyrights

Anton J. Hopen is a partner in the law firm of Smith & Hopen, PA.  The firm, which has offices in the Tampa Bay Area and Washington D.C., specializes in intellectual property protection.  Mr. Hopen serves as TIA's counsel in the area of patents, trademarks, and copyrights.

Mr. Hopen is recognized as an authority on business method patents.  He is admitted to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, all U.S. District Courts in Florida, the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals, and the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.  Mr. Hopen is recognized by the Florida Federal Courts as an expert in his field.

Mr. Hopen, whose clients include the University of South Florida and the University of Tampa, has gained national recognition for his work in intellectual property rights and has been featured in articles in the Wall Street Journal and the Tampa Bay Review.  His publications include articles on patent development and intellectual property protection in the Capital District Business Review, the Business Journal, and Biotechnology Law Report.  He is listed in Who's Who Among American Attorneys.

Mr. Hopen frequently addresses business, professional, and academic groups and has presented lectures for the University of Florida College of Law, the University of South Florida, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, and the Internet Business Association International.

Before joining Smith & Hopen, Mr. Hopen was an associate with Lott & Friedland, PA and also served as prosecutor with the State Attorneys Office for the 6th Judicial Circuit.

Mr. Hopen graduated with honors from the University of South Florida with a BA in Interdisciplinary Science.  He earned his JD from the University of Florida College of Law where he received the Presidential Recognition Award for Outstanding Achievement.  At the University of Florida, Mr. Hopen was also selected to serve as Student Body Chancellor and Chief Justice of the Board of Masters.
